A loch and small reservoir in Central Dumfries and Galloway, Lochinvar lies in the hills to the east of The Glenkens, 3 miles (5 km) northeast of St. John's Town of Dalry. Retained by a low concrete dam, the loch extends to an area of 33.2 ha (82 acres). The Lochinvar Burn flows south towards the Water of Ken and on an islet in the loch stood the ruins Lochinvar Castle, a former stronghold of the Gordons of Lochinvar, one of whom was featured as 'Young Lochinvar' in Lady Heron's song in Sir Walter Scott's 'Marmion'. A cairn nearby records that this island was flooded when the water level was raised in 1968 to form the reservoir, which is now operated by Scottish Water. The reservoir supplies drinking water to towns in the Stewartry.
