Castle Loch

A loch in Annandale, E Dumfries and Galloway, Castle Loch is located immediately to the south southeast of Lochmaben. Extending to 73.7 ha (182 acres), the loch is now a nature reserve. The vendace (Coregonus albula), a herring-like fish which is extremely rare in Britain, inhabited the loch from the last Ice Age until the opening of a sewage works in 1911. The ruined Lochmaben Castle, a former stronghold of the powerful Bruces of Annandale, lies on its southern shore.
