Overview of Conon, River

A river in Easter Ross, the River Conon forms at the outflow of Loch Luichart, 5 miles (8 km) west northwest of Contin. It flows southeast to collect the River Meig at Scatwell and then turns east passing through Loch Achonachie in Strath Conon, to receive the Black Water a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Marybank. 2 miles (3 km) further on it receives the Orrin and then turns northeast to enter the head of the Cromarty Firth between Conon Bridge and Maryburgh, having completed a course of 12 miles (19 km).

Its waters form part of an extensive hydro-electric scheme initiated in the 1940s, and this scheme has been responsible for the loss of the Falls of Conon, which once lay just below the dam at the end of Loch Luichart.
