Overview of Dundonald Castle

Constructed in the 14th Century on the ruins of an earlier structure, Dundonald Castle lies near the South Ayrshire village of Dundonald, 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Kilmarnock. Built by Walter Stewart, it was said to be the favourite residence of King Robert II, who died here in 1390. Although derelict today most of its oblong tower still stands, as does some of the barmkin wall. The Lower Hall illustrates a fine example of a Mediaeval barrel-vaulted ceiling and five heraldic shields carved into the west wall of the castle are amongst the oldest in Scotland. The castle is run by the 'Friends of Dundonald Castle' on behalf of Historic Scotland.
