Luce Bay

A large inlet of the Solway Firth on the southern shore of Dumfries and Galloway, Luce Bay separates the southern peninsula of The Rhins of Galloway from The Machars peninsula to the east. It receives the Water of Luce which flows southwards through Glenluce into the bay. Luce Bay and Sands were designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2005 because of its dune, seashore and marine habitats. The marine environment of the bay represents an intricate mosaic of mud and sandy sediments with sandbanks, reefs and boulders supporting a wide variety of plants and animals. Much of Luce Bay is used by the Ministry of Defence as a training area and firing range, centred at MOD West Freugh.
