Loch Linnhe

A large sea loch in west central Scotland, Loch Linnhe separates the Morvern and Ardgour peninsulas to the west from the districts of Appin and Benderloch and parts of Lochaber to the east. Stretching 22 miles (35 km) from northeast to southwest, it forms a southern extension of the Great Glen that opens out into the Firth of Lorn with the islands of Lismore, Shuna, Bernera and Eilean Balnagowan at its southern end. Its greatest width is nearly 6 miles (9.5 km), while its narrowest point lies just north of the mouth of Loch Leven at the Corran Narrows. At its northern end are the town of Fort William and the entrance to the Caledonian Canal. The loch splits into two channels around Lismore; namely the Lynn of Lorn and the Lynn of Morvern. A major quarry was opened at Glensanda on the western shore of the loch opposite Lismore in 1986.
