Prince Albert's Cairn

The grandest of a collection of commemorative cairns within the policies of Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Prince Albert's Cairn serves as a mournful memorial to the Royal Consort of Queen Victoria, who died of typhoid in 1861 at the age of just 42. It is situated just below the summit of Creag an Lurachain, a half-mile (0.8 km) southwest of Easter Balmoral, and comprises an enormous four-sided pyramid of coursed dressed granite. Individual stones bear the initials of Victoria and her children, having been laid by them, and an inscription records that the memorial was erected by his broken-hearted widow on the 21st August 1862.
