Dunbeath Castle is spectacularly located on a promontory a half-mile (1 km) south of the settlement of Dunbeath, 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Wick, in Highland Council Area. Built by 1428, the castle has undergone 17th century additions and is closely associated with the Clan Sinclair. The castle was drawn in 1815 by William Daniell (1769 - 1837) with the resulting aquatint published in his Voyage Round Great Britain. It was remodelled in the mid-19th century in the Scots Baronial style by David Bryce (1803-76). Dunbeath Castle was sold by the Sinclair family in 1945, but remains a private residence. Now comprising a prominent whitewashed structure, it is now Category-A listed.
