Duns Castle

Duns Castle is located a half-mile (1 km) northwest of the Borders town of Duns. The tower of the castle dates from the 14th Century and was granted to the Earl of Moray by King Robert the Bruce. In 1696, it was purchased for William Hay of Drummelzier by his father John Hay, the Marquess of Tweedale (1625-97) and has remained in the family ever since. The castle was greatly enlarged and transformed into a fine Gothic country house by James Gillespie Graham between 1818 and 1822. The Hay family have lived in the house since the 14th century. On the nearby Duns Law stands the Covenanters' Stone commemorating the encampment of General Sir Alexander Leslie and the Covenanting army in 1639 as they prepared to oppose Charles I in Berwick.
