Ardvreck Castle

A ruined castle in the Assynt district of Sutherland, Ardvreck Castle is situated on a peninsula that juts out into Loch Assynt near Inchnadamph. It was built c.1490 by the Macleods who gained control of Assynt in the 13th Century. In 1650 the laird of Assynt was responsible for the capture of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, after his defeat at the Battle of Carbisdale. Montrose was held prisoner at Ardvreck prior to his being despatched to Edinburgh and the gallows. Ardvreck was subsequently acquired by the Mackenzies who built nearby Calda House, both Ardvreck and Calda later being destroyed by fire.
