Braehead Centre

(Braehead Shopping Centre, Braehead Arena)

Located a mile (1.5 km) east of Renfrew, half-way between Glasgow City Centre and Glasgow Airport on the south bank of the River Clyde, the Braehead Shopping Centre and Retail Park is Scotland's premier shopping centre. Opened in 1999 at a cost of £285 million, the centre has around 150 retail and food outlets of varying types on two floors. The anchor stores are Marks & Spencer, Primark, Boots, New Look and Next. It also has leisure facilities including a cinema, ten-pin bowling alley, indoor golf course, ice rink for skating and curling, the Braehead indoor ski slope, together with a 4000-seat indoor arena and the Clydebuilt Maritime Heritage Centre. The centre covers an estimated 92,900 sq. m (one million square feet) and the adjacent retail park, which lies in 67 ha (165 acres) of land surrounding the shopping centre, includes the largest new-build store in Britain for the Swedish furniture retailer Ikea (constructed 2001 and extending to 29,000 sq m / 310,000 sq feet), together with a sizeable Sainsbury's supermarket. There are an incredible 6500 car parking spaces. The Centre is owned and managed by London-based Intu Properties Plc (formerly Capital Shopping Centres).

The centre was built near the site of the former Braehead Power Station, a coal-fired station which was commissioned in the years following the Second World War and later converted to burning oil. It was demolished in the early 1990s.
