Ross of Mull

The Ross of Mull forms a substantial peninsula facing Iona at the southwest end of the island of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. Its chief settlement is Bunessan. Its distinctive red granite was highly prized and exported across the world. The biggest quarry was at Tormore, to the north of Fionnphort, which operated between 1831 and 1910, although it was briefly re-opened in the late 1980s. The name is interesting in that both 'ross' and 'mull' mean 'promontory', in Gaelic and Old Norse respectively.
