Smailholm Tower

Smailholm Tower is located near the village of Smailholm in the Scottish Borders and was built by the Pringle family in the 15th Century. The castle was subject to many raids by English invaders during the 1540s and by the 1640s the castle had passed into the Scott family hands, though by the early 18th century it had been abandoned in favour of Sandyknowe Farm. It was here in 1773 that Sir Walter Scott spent part of his childhood recuperating, whilst the tower is renowned in Border's ballads. The tower is rectangular in design and was built with rubble and sandstone dressings.
