Burns Monument, Alloway

Completed in 1823, the Burns Monument in Alloway, South Ayrshire, was the first monument built to honour Scotland's National poet, Robert Burns. Created by Thomas Hamilton in a Grecian style, it has a platform half-way up which commands views over the surrounding area, including Brig o' Doon. The monument was financed through public subscription. By 1819 over £1500 had been raised, enabling work to begin a year later on the 25th January, the birthday of Robert Burns.
