Fairfield House

The B-listed Fairfield House in Dalkeith now forms part an office complex for Midlothian Council, although it was built as a classical villa c.1812 for the Mushet family who ran the Dalkeith Iron Foundry. Extensions were added in 1840 which included stained glass windows and ceiling decorations and although it remained derelict for a period it was restored to its former glory by the Council. The house now acts as the entrance to modern offices which were the work of the Michael Laird Partnership 1996-99.

An unusual Category A-listed lean-to glass house was the work of the Dalkeith Iron Works and installed contemporaneously with the building of the house. It was most-likely built to grow vines and a vine from Dalkeith's twin town of Jarnac in France was planted following the recent restoration.
