The Buckie Drifter

Once located in a distinctive modern building on Freuchny Road, Buckie, the Buckie Drifter Maritime Heritage Centre is now permanently closed. Independently run, but with support from Moray Council, the centre opened in 1994 and told the story of the fishing communities of the Moray Firth coast through exhibits on their social and maritime history. Displays included an explanation of the importance of the herring industry and the steam drifters used to catch the fish, together with a recreation of a fish quay in the 1920s. There was also a substantial archive.

HRH the Princess Royal visited in 2001, but the centre closed in 2005 due to declining visitor numbers and growing costs.
