Marischal Museum

Located within the granite edifice of Marischal College on Broad Street (Aberdeen), the Marischal Museum holds the principal collections of the University of Aberdeen, much donated by the graduates and friends of the University over the years since its foundation in 1786. The substantial collection extends to some 80,000 items in five broad areas; namely fine art, Scottish history & archaeology, European, Mediterranean & Near Eastern archaeology, non-Western ethnography and Numismatics (coins and medals). The art collection includes important 17th, 18th and 19th Century Scottish portraits and views of Aberdeen. This collection has been augmented by the Keith Bequest of 19th Century landscapes and a further bequest from author Eric Linklater (1899 - 1974) which includes Scottish Colourists.

The museum is open to the public, but also provides an important resource for the University's students and researchers. The permanent displays and reference collections are augmented by regular temporary exhibitions.

Marischal museum has developed a purpose-built Conservation Laboratory which services its own collection as well as other museums and galleries in the North East of Scotland.
