Located in picturesque chalet-style B-listed buildings which once formed the ticket office and station-master's office at Glenfinnan Station, the Glenfinnan Station Museum lies on the section of the West Highland Railway line which runs from Fort William to Mallaig. The museum opened in 1991 and tells the story of the remarkable single-track line, regarded as one of the great railway journeys of the world, cutting through some spectacular coastal scenery. This section of the line was built by Sir Robert McAlpine between 1897 and 1901 and the museum explains the construction difficulties, the complexities of running a single-track line and displays a range of railway artefacts, as well as providing an archive of associated material. The line and station remain in use, with regular diesel services and a steam-drawn service for tourists in the summer.
The museum also includes two restored West Highland Line railway coaches; one offering a restaurant service and the other accommodation.
A walk which starts here and leads a half-mile (1 km) east to the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct has become known as the 'Harry Potter Trail'.
The museum is operated by a charitable trust.
