A long-established family-run hotel overlooking the River Sligachan, at the junction between the A87 and A863 roads in Central Skye. The Sligachan Hotel was built in 1830 replacing the original inn which was located a half-mile (1 km) distant, nearer the head of Loch Sligachan. The hotel soon became a base for Victorian gentlemen climbers exploring the Cuillin, which rise dramatically to the south.
Today the hotel includes 21 ensuite rooms, a fine-dining restaurant and two bars. There is a small climbing and mountaineering museum, which includes a collection of visitors books, climbing and angling records and other original documents relating to the running of the hotel. It had close associations with the climbers Norman Collie (who died here in 1942) and John Mackenzie (1856 - 1933), who are remembered by Mackenzie's Bar and Collie's Lounge. The Cuillin Brewery was established in the former public bar in 2004, using equipment once operated by the former Physician and Firkin in Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh.
