Cowal

A district of Argyll and Bute, Cowal forms a peninsula indented by sea lochs that lies between Loch Long on the Firth of Clyde in the east and Loch Fyne in the west. More than 31 miles (50 km) in length, its head is relatively narrow (8 miles / 13 km), defined by Arrochar Alps to the northeast of Glen Kinglas and Glen Croe. It narrows further to 5½ miles (9 km) between Loch Goil and Loch Fyne. Cowal is separated from the island of Bute by the Kyles of Bute. Its southernmost point is Ardlamont Point, on is western arm. The principal settlements are Dunoon, Tighnabruaich and Ardbeg and many of its coastal villages are popular holiday resorts. Its rural hinterland is largely given over to sheep farming and forestry, the Argyll Forest Park occupying land in the vicinity of Loch Eck. The highest peak on the peninsula is Beinn an Lochain (901m / 2955 feet).
