Park

(Pairc)

A district of the island of Lewis in the Western Isles, Park (Gael: Pairc) lies to the southeast of the island and is bordered by Loch Seaforth to the west and north. The area was maintained as a deer park by the Earls of Seaforth from the 17th century. Only the north of Park is now inhabited, the south having been cleared of its crofters. Under more benign ownership of Sir James Matheson (1796 - 1878), Park became associated with the struggle for land-rights when a group of crofters occupied the area and roasted 200 of the deer in 1887.
