Located in Newton on Ayr, on the north bank of the River Ayr a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north of the centre of Ayr, the Carnegie Library was built in 1893 by the architects Campbell, Douglas and Morrison. Funded and named after the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1918), the two-storey red sandstone building houses the town's main library as well as a separate section specialising in genealogical research in the Ayrshire area. A significant feature of the library is the nine-panel stained glass window by Stephen Adam (1848 - 1910) which depicts Carnegie, together with his monogram and that of his wife, Louise.
