St. Enoch's Centre, Glasgow

A shopping square located between the River Clyde and Argyle Street, the St Enoch Square, was created in 1783 and was originally used for grazing sheep. In 1876, the St Enoch Railway Station opened here to be followed three years later by the St Enoch Hotel. The largest hotel in Glasgow, the St Enoch Hotel remained open until 1974 by which time the railway station had closed and the land was being used as a car park. In 1985, work started on the St Enoch Shopping Centre, which now dominates this area, while within the centre of the Square lies an underground station.
