Overview of Lowther Hills

A range of hills straddling the border between South Lanarkshire to the north and Dumfries and Galloway to the south, the Lowther Hills rise to 732m (2403 feet) at Green Lowther. Other principal peaks include Lowther Hill (725m / 2377 feet), Queensberry (697m / 2285 feet), and Ballencleuch Law (691m / 2267 feet), all lying in the watershed between Annandale to the east and Nithsdale to the west. The Elvan, Snar, Wanlock, Crawick, Mennock, Enterkin, Potrail and Daer waters rise in the Lowther Hills, the source of the Daer Water forming a reservoir. Three roads traverse the Lowther Hills from southwest to northeast via the Dalveen Pass, Mennock Pass and Crawfordjohn and upland villages at Wanlockhead, Leadhills and Elvanfoot, amongst the highest settlements in Scotland, owe their origins to lead mining in the vicinity.
