Southern Necropolis

The Southern Necropolis was originally created to provide inexpensive but dignified burials for the Glasgow's inhabitants, rather than the standard practice at that time which involved the use of common graves. It replaced the Old Gorbals Burial Ground which had become overcrowded. Comprising three sections, Central opened in 1840, West (1846) and East (1850), this cemetery is the final resting place of Sir Thomas Lipton (1850 - 1931), Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75) and Hugh MacDonald (1817-60). The entrance archway was designed and built by architect Charles Wilson (1810-63) who is also buried here.
