Comely Bank

A residential district on the north side of Edinburgh, Comely Bank lies between Inverleith to the north and Dean to the south with Stockbridge to the east and Craigleith to the west. The former Comely Bank estate was the property of Sir William Fettes, founder of Fettes College which was built on the gentle slope of Comely Bank to a design by David Bryce and opened in 1870. Residents of Comely Bank in the 19th century included the landscape painter John Ewbank (1779 - 1847) and the physician Sir James Young Simpson (1811-70).
