Despite its small size of only 8.9 ha (22 acres), the University of Dundee Botanic Gardens include a wide collection of plants, trees and shrubs, housed in glasshouses, a water garden and herb garden. The garden was established in 1971 and is located in the west of the city, off the Perth Road and overlooking the Firth of Tay. Although open to the public, its principal use is to provide plant material for teaching and research in the University. The original buildings on the site were enhanced by a dramatic pavilion in 1982.
