Backwater Reservoir

A reservoir of NW Angus, Backwater lies to the east of Glen Isla and 7 miles (11 km) north of Alyth. Opened in 1969 by HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Backwater Reservoir links with Lintrathen Reservoir, 2½ miles (4 km) to the south, and supplies water to almost 300,000 people in Dundee, the towns of Angus as well as Coupar Angus, Blairgowrie and the Carse of Gowrie. The 800-m (2625-foot) long earth embankment dam wall retains a man-made loch 2 miles (3 km) in length, with an area of 158 ha (390 acres) and containing approximately 25 million cubic metres (883 million cubic feet) of water. The reservoir supports a recreational fishery for brown trout managed by Lintrathen Angling Association.
