A breach in a line of cliffs which opens into a large amphitheatre on Esha Ness in Shetland, the Grind o' da Navir (or Grind of the Navir) is located 2 miles (3 km) west northwest of Braehoulland. It is the result of the action of enormous waves during North Atlantic storms, which have thrown blocks of rock of up to 3m (10 feet) more than 15m (33 feet) above sea level. The red rock here is an ignimbrite formed from pyroclastic flows that swept down the sides of a volcano in Devonian times. The sequence to the south is said to represent the best section through the flank of a volcano in the British Isles.
