Auchtermuchty Parish Church

Located on high ground, close to the centre of Auchtermuchty, the Parish Church of Auchtermuchty and Dunshalt is an 18th C. box, with slender bell-tower supported on elongated columns.

There has been a church on the site since the 13th C. Duncan, the last MacDuff Earl of Fife, gifted it to Lindores Abbey in 1350. The present church was erected by Robert Wilkie, a Dundee wright, between 1779 and 1781. It was extended through the addition of the north aisle in 1838. In 1913, alterations were undertaken, including the installation of some fine stained glass and a pipe organ, the latter partially funded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1918). The organ was originally water-powered.

The church has two bells; one is Dutch dating from 1618, the other dates from the mid-13th C. and is supposedly made of silver.

The kirkyard contains a fine collection of head-stones, dating back to the 17th C.
