A peninsula and district of Highland Council area, lying between Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn and separated from the Sleat peninsula of the Isle of Skye by the Sound of Sleat. Its mountainous nature has maintained its isolation, with no roads entering the area, although minor roads towards the west of the peninsula connect Inverie, the only village, with hamlets at Airor and Inverguseran. Inverie is connected by ferry to Mallaig.
The main peaks of Knoydart are Ladhar Bheinn (1020m / 3346 feet), Meall Buidhe (946m / 3104 feet), Luinne Bheinn (939m / 3081 feet) and Beinn Bhuidhe (855m / 2804 feet).
The Knoydart Estate, which once covered the entire peninsula, has had a controversial history including a land raid in 1948 by the 'Seven Men of Knoydart' who are regarded as pioneers of the land reform movement in Scotland.
