Appin

A district on the indented coastline of Loch Linnhe and straddling the boundary between Argyll and Bute and Highland Council Area, Appin lies to the north of Loch Creran and Benderloch and to the south of Loch Leven. Its principal settlements are Portnacroish, Port Appin (where a ferry connects with the island of Lismore), Duror, Kentallen, South Ballachulish and Ballachulish. The name Appin, which refers to the abbey lands that were associated with Lismore, is linked to the infamous 'Appin Murder', the killing of Colin Campbell of Glenure in the 18th Century. The area gives its name to appinite, a type of igneous rock, formed during the Caledonian Orogeny.
