Upper North Water Bridge

A three-span bridge which crosses the River North Esk, and the border between Angus and Aberdeenshire, the Upper North Water Bridge is located 2¼ miles (3.5 km) west of Marykirk. Built in the 16th century, it was repaired in 1809 and widened in 1841 by John Gibb of Aberdeen. The bridge was tolled to raise money for its upkeep in 1669 and the former toll-house can still be found at its southern end. Once carrying a principal routeway to NE Scotland, it was replaced by a modern bridge to the west in the 1970s but remains in use for local traffic.
