Glen Shira Hydro Electric Scheme

A modest power generation development in E Argyll and Bute, the Glen Shira Hydro Electric Scheme is centred around Lochan Shira, at the head of Glen Shira, 5 miles (8 km) south of Dalmally and 8½ miles (14 km) northeast of Inveraray. It comprises an extension of the Sloy-Awe Hydro-Electric Power Scheme, which is centred 9 miles (15 km) to the southeast, and was opened in 1956 but not completed until the following year. The principal reservoirs are Lochan Shira and Lochan Sron Mor, but there are also a number of small dams and inlets tapping water from numerous streams and small rivers, all connected through a network of aqueducts. These include the Beinn Ghlas Aqueduct, Brannie Aqueduct, Clachan Aqueduct, Kilblean Aqueduct, Sithein Aqueduct and Stacain Aqueduct. There are two power stations; the Clachan Power Station (40 megawatts) at the head of Loch Fyne and Sron Mor Power Station (5 megawatts) located between the two reservoirs. The scheme is operated by the Perth-based utility company Scottish and Southern Energy Plc.
