Overview of Old Town

The Old Town of Stirling lies in the lee of Stirling Castle, occupying the glacier-carved tail which descends to the southeast from the crag on which the castle was built. Most of Stirling's historic buildings are located in this area, including the Church of the Holy Rude, Cowane's Hospital, Argyll's Lodgings, Mar's Wark, Stirling Old Town Jail, the Tolbooth, the Athenaeum and Old High School. The Old Town remains an residential area, with an amount of social housing which was rebuilt or refurbished during the 20th century.
