The Elephant House

A cafe and tea-house on George IV Bridge in Central Edinburgh, the Elephant House was established in 1995. It occupies a fine B-listed ashlar tenement building which dates from c.1845. This features fine carved Jacobean scrollwork above the window pediments and a decorative roofline parapet. The building rises five storeys from Merchant Street but just three storeys from George IV Bridge. The cafe offers fine views of Edinburgh Castle to the rear and promotes itself as the "birthplace of Harry Potter" on the basis that the author J.K. Rowling (b.1965) wrote some of her work here.
