Whalsay Leisure Centre

One of a remarkable network of leisure centres operated by the Shetland Recreational Trust, built with funds generated by the oil industry, Whalsay Leisure Centre is located in Symbister, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) east of the harbour. Opened in 1990, it was designed by Newcastle-based architects Faulkner Browns and includes a 15m (50 foot) three-lane swimming pool with small lagoon, games hall, squash court, fitness suite, community meeting room, viewing balcony and pool tables. An astroturf pitch next to the leisure centre, was completed in 2002. The Primary Department of Whalsay School lies adjacent.
