North Mainland Leisure Centre

One of a remarkable network of leisure centres operated by the Shetland Recreational Trust, North Mainland Leisure Centre is located at Brae, next to Brae High School. Built in 1988, it was designed by Newcastle-based architects Faulkner Browns and was greatly extended in 2000. It now includes a 16.7m (55 foot) three-lane swimming pool with small lagoon, squash court, fitness suite, steam room, community meeting room and pool tables. Adjacent is an all-weather astroturf pitch.

The centre was built with funds from the Shetland Charitable Trust that was responsible for distributing the Disturbance Receipts, which were intended to compensate the people of Shetland for siting the oil terminal at Sullom Voe.
