Whalsay Golf Course

Britain's most northerly golf club has its course on the headland of Skaw Taing in Whalsay (Shetland), next to Whalsay Airstrip. The course extends to 6171 yards (5642m) and is par 71. Golf was first played on the island in the 1850s by the Laird and his family close to their home at Symbister House. Whalsay Golf Club was founded by a group of local residents in 1976. The course initially had just nine holes, but within a year was increased to eighteen. In 1989 it was refurbished and recognised by Scottish Golf Union in 1990. In the early years, all the work was undertaken by the members and it was not until 1994 that a greenkeeper was employed. The clubhouse, which incorporates a bar and changing facilities, was built in 1996. The club has proven popular with Whalsay's wealthy residents and the course has been subject to regular improvements.
