Holmsgarth Ferry Terminal

Holmsgarth Ferry Terminal represents the principal gateway to Shetland for passengers, vehicles and freight, with daily sailings to the Scottish mainland and summer links with the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Denmark. The terminal forms part of Lerwick Harbour and is located a mile (1.5 km) northwest of the centre of the town centre. Opened in 2002 at a cost of around £3.6 million the new terminal extended an earlier pier and replaced a single-storey terminal building dating from 1975. In addition, the project brought a new vehicle marshalling area, a 20-m (66-foot) long hydraulic linkspan bridge for vehicle loading and a new overhead walkway to provide passenger access to ferries. Its most significant user is NorthLink Ferries, with their roll-on-roll-off vessels Hjaltland and Hrossey running overnight services to Aberdeen which also call at Kirkwall in Orkney. The introduction of these larger vessels required a 50m (164 foot) pier extension which precipitated the building of the new terminal. The terminal handles c.129,000 passengers annually and is owned and operated by Lerwick Port Authority. Freight facilities and access were improved in 2003, with additional roll-on-roll-off facilities for trucks, trailers and containers.
