Scord Quarry

A substantial quarry which has eaten into Outnabreck Hill at the head of the East Voe of Scalloway, Scord Quarry has been in operation since c.1935. Now owned and run by Shetland Islands Council, up to 100,000 tonnes of metamorphic phyllite rock is extracted annually and then crushed on-site to form an aggregate which is used in road building and maintenance. The only asphalt plant in Shetland, it produces approximately 50,000 tonnes of bitumen-coated material for road surfacing. The bitumen is delivered by sea to Scalloway Harbour, a half-mile (1 km) to the southwest, and stored in tanks at the quarry until needed.
