A significant modern milk-processing facility located on the right bank of the River Annan, 1¼ miles (2 km) east southeast of Lochmaben and 2 miles (3 km) west of Lockerbie in E Dumfries and Galloway, Lockerbie Creamery was opened in 1975 by Queen Elizabeth II. With a staff of over 200, the creamery today produces traditional and spreadable butter and cheeses including Lockerbie Cheddar, Red Leicester and low-fat cheese. In 2010, the construction of an additional production line brought butter output to 10,000 tons per annum, while a £20-million expansion began in 2011, more than tripling cheese production to 37,000 tonnes per annum, making Lockerbie the largest dairy processing facility in Scotland.
The Lockerbie Creamery was shared between Milk Link and Arla Foods, prior to the merger of these two companies in 2012. Formed in 2000, Milk Link comprises a network of 2200 British farmers while Arla is a Pan-Europe farmer's cooperative.
