An ancient cross mounted on a more recent cubic stone pedestal, 2m (6½ feet) in height, the Kilpheder Cross is located on a grassy knoll a half-mile (0.8 km) north of Balmartin in the NW of North Uist. It measures 1.53m (5 feet) high and 0.83m (2¾ feet) across. Found in an old graveyard, which was revealed during ploughing, although there was no trace of the related chapel of Cill-Pheadair. A plaque on the pedestal records that the cross was placed here by Dr. Alexander MacLeod of Balelone, Factor of the North Uist Estate, c.1830-40, and repaired by his descendents in 1913-14 and again in 1960.
