Manuel Nunnery

Located on the left bank of the River Avon on the eastern border of Falkirk Council Area, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) southeast of Whitecross, Manuel Nunnery was founded by King Malcolm IV around 1164. The ruins of this small religious community represent the western gable of a once-substantial church, the remainder was removed by a flood c.1783. The site was occupied by nuns of the Cistercian order, with a prioress and four nuns in residence in 1552. Thereafter it fell from use and the church was known to be a roofless ruin c.1739 with permission was sought to remove stone c.1741. The site was subject to archaeological investigation 2006-08.
