Rutherford's Monument

A granite obelisk set amongst the Boreland Hills in Dumfries and Galloway, Rutherford's Monument lies a half-mile (0.8 km) southeast of Anwoth and ¾ mile (1.2 km) west southwest of Gatehouse of Fleet. A plaque records that the monument commemorates the Rev. Samuel Rutherford (1600-61), who was the minister at Anwoth between 1627 and 1639, although he was banished for his unacceptable views in 1636. The monument was erected in 1842. Including a square plinth and stepped base, it is 16.8m (55 feet) in height. A secondary plaque records that the monument was hit by lightning in 1847 and rebuilt four years later.

The names of all of the Ministers at Anwoth until 2000 were listed on a Millennium Cairn which lies opposite the monument. Pleasant walks provide access to these monuments.
