A massive granite B-listed construction at the summit of Beacon Hill, 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of Dalmally, the McIntyre Monument commemorates the Gaelic poet Duncan Ban McIntyre (1724 - 1812) who was born nearby in Glen Orchy. Built in 1859 and comprising a circular 'Greek Temple' on a square base, the monument was the work of Glasgow-based architect John T. Rochead (1814-78) and paid for by public subscription. It is 13.5m (44 feet) in height. Queen Victoria was said to be thrilled by the view when she came here in 1875.
