Persley Castle

(The Barracks)

A little toy fort on the south bank of the River Don, 2½ miles (4 km) northwest of Aberdeen city centre, Persley Castle dates from c.1795 and was built as a stable block for nearby Woodside House. However, it was soon re-purposed to serve as a dormitory for young calico-printing apprentices at Woodside Cotton Works and was known as The Barracks. Woodside Works opened in 1779 and was employing more than 3000 people by 1822.

Persley Castle comprises a square rubble block with end bays slightly advanced and a taller central tower. The design features crenellations, pepper-pot turrets and Gothic windows. Much later the building served as the headquarters of the NE River Purification Board. It now comprises Persley Castle Care Centre and comprises accommodation for 40 residents, including up to 35 older people and 5 adults with physical impairment, arranged over three floors. Most are single rooms with en-suite facilities, although there is one double room that can be shared by a couple.
