The Kingdom Shopping Centre is a truly awful architectural experience which forms the centre of the New Town of Glenrothes and represents the largest indoor shopping centre in the 'Kingdom' of Fife. Begun in 1961-63, designed by Glasgow-based Peter Tinto who was Chief Architect to the Glenrothes Development Corporation, it has grown through a succession of development phases and now extends to an area of 40,000 sq. m (430,550 sq. feet). It connects Lyon Square and Rothes Square, the latter formally designated as the town centre. Bought for £34 million by Mars Pension Trustees Ltd from the Co-operative Insurance Society and AXA Real Estate Investment Management in 2013, it now includes 110 retail units and connects to the Rothes Halls in the west and includes the Glenrothes Library, a bowling alley and cinema. The anchor is one of only four Scottish branches of the Irish retail group Dunnes Stores. The Centre is noted for its sizeable sculptures.
