Highland Mary's Monument

(Burns Monument)

Highland Mary's Monument (often known as the Burns Monument) is a substantial square red sandstone pillar which overlooks the hamlet of Failford in South Ayrshire. It commemorates the final parting of poet Robert Burns (1759-96) and 'Highland' Mary Campbell (1763-86) on the 14th May 1786. Burns had an affair with Mary whilst married to Jean Armour and Mary died just months later. The monument is now B-listed and was erected by the Burns Federation in 1921, funded by Belfast-based Harland and Wolff shipbuilders, who also operated a shipyard in Greenock where Mary was buried.
