A plain three-storey house, which competently hides its original appearance, Bonnyhaugh House lies in the Edinburgh suburb of Bonnington a half-mile (1 km) west southwest of Leith. Rubble-built in 1621 by the Town Council of Edinburgh for a Dutch dyer, Jeromias van der Heill, who they had invited to Scotland to teach locals his skills, it was later occupied by Robert Keith, Bishop of Fife, who died here in 1757. It was probably rebuilt in the mid-19th C. and is now C-listed, comprising two storeys over a full-height basement, with the entrance reached by a forestair. The associated mill buildings were demolished in 1983, but the house was saved, restored and subdivided into flats.
